Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then found many other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say initial examinations show the fluid was likely human blood.

"There is still no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have requested to the public for details.

A senior representative said the attack left him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.

"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
