The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes
Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
