Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
